Kane Mountain Fire Tower

The 60-foot tall Kane Mountain fire tower is located on the summit. It was first built in 1925 and was restored in 2003. The summit of Kane is wooded, but climbing the fire tower gives spectacular views of the whole Canada Lake region, the Silver Lake Wilderness, and Peck and Caroga lakes.

John Boyd Thacher State Park

Thacher State Park is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Cherry Plain State Park is nestled in the woods of the Taconic Valley. The park's 175 acres are a quiet alternative to other parks in the region. The park's setting on Black River Pond features a sandy beach with adjacent picnic grounds and a boat launch. The park also has bridle paths and hiking, biking, and nature trails that serve as cross-country ski trails in winter. Anglers enjoy fishing for bass, bullheads, and pickerel here.
